Ingoring file in git status window

Hi, According to the sublimegit documentation, I should be able to ignore a file in the status window by simply placing the cursor on the line with the filename and pressing i. This doesn't work. Nothing happens. The text field at the bottom doesn't appear either. I am running windows 7 and sublime text 2.
