Hi,
I recently encountered some weird compilation issues for this library, and as part of debugging it I tried to update the rustler version. It ended up not being directly related, but since I had already done the work I thought I would clean it up and upstream it. I also went through and did minor improvements and changes I thought were logical.
If you have anything you want changed or want me to split it up in separate commits then let me know.
