I am using XStreamOS with the latest April 2017 Update. I have installed x86_64 MATE desktop 1.14 package for pkgsrc 2016Q4.

  1. Launched MATE via /usr/bin/startx at display:0 .
  2. The MATE panel fails to load. There is also an error message displayed for caja. Both these problems are shown in screenshot 1.
  3. Returned to console via Ctrl-Alt-F2. There is a constant scrolling of error & warning messages as shown in screenshot 2.
  4. Had to terminate the X Server by hitting Ctrl-C. The console after this is shown in screenshot 3.

The X Server mentioned in point 4 is the native Xorg provided by XStreamOS distro IPS repo. Repeated the above steps with modular xorg from pkgsrc-2016q4. Launched with modular xorg using the below command:
/opt/local/bin/startx

My .xinitrc in my home user directory has only the following line:
exec /opt/local/bin/mate-session

The results were the same. XStreamOS has lightdm with LXDE as the default desktop . I disabled this before launching startx on both occasions via:
svcadm disable lightdm

I used the x86_64 pkgsrc-2016q4 bootstrap kit.
I also installed MATE from pkgsrc-2017Q1,pkgsrc-2016Q3,pkgsrc-2016Q2 & pkgsrc-2016Q1. All of the MATE packages included in these releases have the same MATE panel issue. Due to this I am unable to MATE at all

The below link shows MATE successfully installed in a screenshot for OmniOS r151018 with pkgsrc Xorg. How was that successfully installed? Was it because it was a distro different from what I am using presently?

I am using the following desktop rig for running XStreamOS:
Processor : Intel Core i7 6700(Skylake)
Motherboard : ASUS Z170 ProGaming
RAM: 8 GB DDR4 2133 MHz Corsair
Hard Disk : 1TB Seagate

This rig has no discrete AMD/nVidia graphics card.

They all seem to be dbus related. Try disabling the native dbus service, launch the pkgsrc/dbus one instead, and ensure that the dbus commands from /opt/local are first in your PATH.

I tried your suggestions but still no luck . The problem persists. The error messages are the same as shown in screenshot 4. The services info are listed in screenshot 5. Thanks for stepping in!
