The player should be able to connect to other player's worlds and interact with them. This will also include a dedicated server that people can host on their own.

Look at PokeMMO for inspiration.

Basic local network play has been implemented by Pastaq. There are still plans to further expand multiplayer functionality to include challenging network opponents to combat and have a hosted version of Tuxemon server.

I definitely support this! I noticed that there's a Multiplayer menu option, but I'm not sure if it's meant to be just for battles. Personally I only see a point to having multiplayer if every player spawns in the world and can roam around, interacting with the environment and of course other players.
