Vim allows you to augment a search (with / or ?) with a character or line offset from the beginning or end of the pattern. When jumping to a search result, your character will end up at the position after applying the offset. More information is available here: http://vimdoc.sourceforge.net/htmldoc/usr_27.html#27.3
