Freeze, black screen when switching video mode

Team Fortress works with default settings here on 64-bit Ubuntu 12.10 with an NVIDIA Quadro 1000M using the nouveau driver.

But, when I try to switch mode, either to a window instead of fullscreen, or reducing the resolution but remaining in fullscreen mode, the game freezes, showing just a black screen.
