Your system information

  • System information from steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) in a gist
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

I wasn't able to use my mic at all, nor change the record device, but then I've:

drivers = alsa,pulse,core,oss

[pulse]
allow-moves=yes

in ~/.alsoftrc

After that I was able to +voicerecord and change the device(to not use the Monitor of built-in audio analog that it uses, but the Built-in Audio Analog). However, right after I press the push-to-talk button, it resets to Monitor of built-in audio analog. How can I stop it resetting or set Built-in Audio Analog as a default?

Also, when I try to test with Steam, there will be no sound from the mic at all. And the dropdown to select Voice Input Device shows only Default. It does show the Audio Analog for Voice Output Device, though and I'm able to hear my teammates.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Do the steps above
    Same happens with Audacity.

Hello @BKirev, does the workaround at #190 (comment) help?

Hello.
Sadly, it doesn't. Please check out the GIF below.

Okay, after all kind of experiments with pulseaudio/alsa and crashing them countless times, I've bought a separate mic, which I plugged in in the rear jack. Everything works just fine this way. This is a hardware solution, but it's a compromise I'm willing to make. Plus the fact that the issue could've been with my setup, even though I was not able to locate it. Closing the issue.

Confirming issue.

As I see, this is a common enough issue, published at many sites:

I had a similar problem. I enabled voice_loopback 1 and used +voicerecord, and I heard the echoing of ingame sounds like a shots. Settings in Steam (Steam -> Friends List -> Manage friends list settings (gear in the top right) -> Voice) were correct, and I heard my voice during the testing. When I opened pavucontrol, I saw the game using a "Monitor" device as sound input. In my case, this solution helped:

The problem is that the game does not correctly determine the default sound input device and using inproper one.

Please, fix it!
