In TF2 has no sound by default. In same time - Big Picture mode work with sound correctly. The reason - in default sound system. In OpenSUSE - pulseaudio. Installation of steam does not set SDL_AUDIODRIVER enviroment variable as

export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulseaudio

and everything works fine. This solution is struts. These changes must be introduced into the system during installation

As the sound does work in Steam big picture I did not want to add this to the RPM. We can't fix every game related problem in it. I added https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Team_Fortress_2 which hopefully everyone finds via Google.

Is this still an issue on the latest client, do you still require the export?

I hear sound in the Steam big picture intro by default, but I still have the issue in 32-bit openSUSE in all Valve games including GoldSrc #1351. This is annoying because the workaround conflicts with other SDL games: UrbanTerror will have no sound when I export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulseaudio.
