The document makes rather extensive uses the abbreviation "VO" (and related terms, like "VO-centric" and "VO-admin") when defining expected behaviour.

There are two problems here:

  • (rather trivially) the document never identifies that this VO abbreviation is short for "virtual organisation".
  • (more significantly) the document never defines what is VO. It tacitly assumes that the reader already knows this.

The second point is much more worrying. Without a concrete definition of the term, it is open to different interpretations. Different readers, with different experiences or use-cases in mind, may draw different conclusions on whether something is or isn't a VO.

paulmillar added a commit to paulmillar/common-jwt-profile that referenced this issue Aug 4, 2023
Motivation:

The document makes many references to VOs but neither defining for what
"VO" stands, nor describing what is a virtual organisation.

This is bad because the document makes a destinction between VOs (as
top-level collection of users) and group (as non-top-level collection of
useres), so the definition matters.

Modification:

Modify first paragraph to use "virtual organisation" instead of VO.

Add definition of a VO.

Result:

It becomes easier to understand whether a group of people constitute a
VO.

Closes: WLCG-AuthZ-WG#38
