The Lua shell escape bridge is a component that does useful things unrelated to markdown and therefore of potential use to other TeX packages. Furthermore, it is a component that will be subject to breakage as TeX engines develop and making it available to others should ensure that more people will be willing to keep it alive, reducing maintenance costs of Markdown.
