Steam Overlay Troubleshooting

Q: BPM won't show the overlay and/or my controller config doesn't work in-game. Help!

A: First, you should read the documentation from Valve on troubleshooting the Steam Overlay.

If you've already done that, or you'd rather not go through the whole document, then make sure you've checked the following:

  • Temporarily disable programs/loaders like: ReShade, MSI Afterburner, Rivatuner Statistics Server (RTSS), or other third-party overlays while you're trying to find what is interfering with Steam's overlay.
  • Make sure that programs like FRAPS are not running in the background (FRAPS breaks overlays!).
  • If you insist on using overlays based on RTSS, then please disable "Custom Direct3D support" and "Stealth mode" options, as these have the potential to break the Steam and third-party launcher overlays.
  • If you're using third-party antivirus/antimalware try to add a folder/executable exclusion rule for Steam, the game you're having trouble with, and its launcher (if applicable). If this doesn't work or your antivirus doesn't allow exclusion rules try disabling/uninstalling the offending antivirus/antimalware product and try again.
  • If you're attempting to use a launcher overlay plus Steam's BPM overlay together and you're having difficulty getting both to work at the same time - or are experiencing crashes - you may, unfortunately, have to disable the third-party launcher overlay.
  • Double check that Steam, the launcher executable you're using (if any), and the game executable are not set to run with Administrator privileges in their respective Compatibility settings dialog(s). If after changing this they still don't work then try setting only Steam to run with Admin privileges in its compatibility dialog.

Q: I'm using an AMD GPU and I'm having trouble getting the Origin/UPlay overlay to work with Steam's overlay. How can I fix this?

A: Disable the AMD External Events Utility service in Task Manager or the system services dialog (services.msc).

Be aware that there is a tradeoff for this: FreeSync support will not work if the AMD External Events Utility service is not running.
