What problem does this address?

Right now the https://wordpress.org/photos directory is underutilized.

What is your proposed solution?

Add it as a source in the image block:

This would build on work done previously to integrate Openverse into the Media tab in the Inserter #44496 and is worth exploring as part of phase 3 work with the media library: #55238

Hey there! Looks like you're likely using a plugin or a different hosting provided like WordPress.com as this is the default image option in WordPress currently:

There isn't currently any official source, unless you're adding this way which includes Openverse:

I'm going to close this out as a result!

Here's more information about future media library work too in case you're interested: #55238

Opening this after chatting via DM and understanding the use case a bit more (and connecting some dots)! I've taken the liberty to edit and update the issue. For context, we'd want to include Openverse integration as any photo in the photo directory is included in Openverse too and that would match the current experience: https://make.wordpress.org/openverse/handbook/openverse-and-photo-directory/#photo-directory

While that is true, that is not the desired experience.

The ticket was originally about adding the photo directory, and the photo directory is distinctly different from Openverse.

There should be a link and search specifically for the wordpress.org Photos Directory only, without utilizing the Openverse project.

Can you say a bit more?

Here is an idea that I think gathers both visions.

Since the Photo Directory collection is huge, it needs a way of browsing and searching the images. Therefore, introducing the collection through Openverse features fits both purpose perfectly.

Openverse.in.modal.i1.3.mp4

The idea adds a new option in the image block that opens Openverse in a modal with the Photo Directory collection by default. Important note: The "search free images" action shown as a button in the placeholder, should follow the solution discussed and agreed on #38275.

What do you think?
