Subject says it all: fontpath initialization appears to have been moved from xinitrc.d to somewhere else. Proof: setting fontpath in 10-fontdir.sh to some arbitrary value and restarting Xquartz 2.8.0 does not change the fontpath reported by

xset q

With the fontpath initialized somewhere else, the question is, how to add a user fontdir to Xquartz 2.8.0. This was handled in previous versions by querying the existence of files $USER/.fonts/fonts.dir and $USER/Library/Fonts/fonts.dir and adding the respective directories in case of a positive test to the fontpath (see code in 10-fontdir.sh).
