futuretools
===========

With the introduction of concurrent.futures, python has provided a standard way
to express concurrency in programs. The built-in ThreadPoolExecutor and
ProcessPoolExecutor each have their limitations, but they already provide
substantial opportunities for parallelism. More importantly, an algorithm that
uses the concurrent.futures interface can be agnostic about the nature of the
pool. This package is a collection of numerical code that uses
concurrent.futures to express concurrency, and Executor implementations to allow
these algorithms to use other kinds of parallelism, for example, MPI or the
ipython parallel interface (which can run on top of MPI).

Notable items:

mpi_executor.py: provides an Executor that works in an MPI context, running the
main process on rank 0 and the worker nodes on the rest of the
ranks. See mpi_demo.py for an example use.

ipy_executor.py: provides an Executor that uses an ipyparallel cluster of
workers to execute its tasks. These clusters can be set
up to use local process pools, MPI-started process pools,
or processes started by sshing into cluster nodes. This
executor allows interactive use. See ipy_executor_demo.ipynb
                 for an example use.

thread_derivative.py: robust numerical gradients computed in parallel, based
on the MINUIT code. Uses a thread pool on the main node
to eke out a little more parallelism.

async_*.py: demo programs using coroutines to get parallelism out of nontrivial
            algorithms.
