It would be great if this could randomize (via an option checkmark), e.g. sometimes you might select one rectangle, populate from a tag, then later select another rectangle, populate from the same tag. Now you have the same picture in both.
As a solution I would propose to fetch image URLs for no. of objects times two, but at least 16, and randomize the results before populating.

Great suggestion @samluescher. A few other folks have asked for something like this too. Since the Instagram API doesn't allow getting random photos, the solution you suggested would be the way to go. Will add this soon. Thanks!
