Follow these steps to Git glory! Use the command line (please)! Need help? Use the cheat sheets I gave you...
- Change directory to your desktop.
- Create a new project folder (not a rails project just an empty folder!) and call it whatever you want.
- Change directory into the new folder.
- Initialize a new git repository.
- Using whatever editor you choose open the folder in your editor and create the following:
- A file called README.md. Do not add any content to this file at the moment.
- A folder called whatever you want containing a file named your_name.txt replacing your_name with your actual name duh. Make the content of this file any text you want.
- Add the above files to the repository and create a commit using git.
- Go to your github account and create a new repository. Name it the same as your project folder name.
- Back in your terminal, add the newly created github repo as your local repositories remote origin. Hint: There is a line you can copy on your newly created repos page...
- Push your repository to github.
- Make a change to your README.md file, commit it and push it to Github.
- Your are done! Let me know you made it here...
Bonus Time:
Try the following...
- Fork this repo! You should see a button somewhere on this page that says fork...
- Now go to your github page and find the page for the repository you just forked to your account.
- Copy the clone url on your forked repos page. Bottom right side...
- Go to your terminal and change to the desktop.
- Use command line git and the url you just copied to clone this repository to your desktop.
- Change directory into the newly cloned repo.
- Add a file inside the your_file_goes_here directory called your_name.txt again using your own name.
- Git add and commit this change and push the change to Github.
- Now go back to your fork of this repo on your github page.
- Find the pull request section and open a new pull request using the new pull request button.
- Follow the instructions on the pull request page to complete.
- You're done!
