Since releasing 4.0, we've been getting lots of reports that folks are having issues installing the library, due to errors related to Git LFS: #1830, #1834
Unfortunately I think the only solution here is to revert the changes that adopted Git LFS.
Reverts #1824. Fixes #1830, fixes #1834.
