🎉 New Destination: Google Cloud Storage #4329

What

This pull request will add Google Cloud Storage as a new destination for Airbyte,

How

The connector is mostly derived from S3 0.1.6, including then CSV and Parquet files.
Few changes have been applied to destination-jdbc as one of the methods was missing (GcsStreamCopier.java -> attemptGcsWriteAndDelete).
In addition, a new folder called destination-gcs has been created with all the libraries needed.

Recommended reading order

  1. destination-gcs/*
  2. destination-jdbc/*

Hmm, halfway through the review I noticed that this PR currently does not work for GCS. All the writers are related to S3. Maybe you have not pushed the latest changes?

Many code should be shared between the S3 and GCS destinations. I think it's fine to have some duplicated code for now. We can DRY them when we add the Azure destination. However, I think code related to the JsonToAvroSchemaConverter, at least, should be shared.

@sherifnada, where do you think we should put the shared code for S3 and GCS (and future Azure)? What about a module in airbyte-integrations/connectors/destination-object-storage? Or one module per format (if necessary), like destination-format-csv and destination-format-parquet.

Would you mind changing the all-capital GCS in the calss names to Gcs? The argument is that in this way, the acronym is more readable. This is especially the case when there are multiple acronyms, like the GCSCcsv- classes. I think GcsCsvWriter is more clear than GCSCsvWriter. It is also more consistent in that both GCS and CSV are acronyms, so they should have the same format (and it probably should not be GCSCSVWriter).

This is also the naming convention recommended by Effective Java:

A strong argument can be made in favor of capitalizing only the first letter: even if multiple acronyms occur back-to-back, you can still tell where one word starts and the next word ends. Which class name would you rather see, HTTPURL or HttpUrl?

(Third edition, page 289 - 290.)

I think I ended up not using project_id at all so I will just remove it completely from here and spec.json. Need to double check though

This class is an exact copy of the S3CsvWriter. It does not work for GCS. The client passed into the constructor is for S3, and I think StreamTransferManager only works for S3 as well.

As per google documentation the client passed into the constructor can be an S3 client as long as the endpoint is GCS (other than HMAC keys of course). Let me test it again (I only tried once or twice) and confirm

All the configs associated with GCS are commented out. Currently this writer only works for S3. Maybe you forgot to push the latest changes?

hey @tuliren my bad, these are different tests I was doing to check how Airbyte was connecting to GCS: all those are useful in case of service account (username, password and authkey).
I can test it again just to make sure I didn't mess up with the files while creating the PR, but it does work with GCS

After my test, i'll remove what is not needed.

tuliren commented Jun 25, 2021

@MaxwellJK, since you have tested it locally, the acceptance test probably also works as is. Would you mind including that to the PR as well (like copy the S3 CSV and Parquet destination acceptance test)? It is fine if you prefer to skip that. We can do it ourselves later.

There are two main issues:

  1. The GcsConfig is modified. Some fields are added, and some are removed. This will break the snowflake destination. The existing GcsConfig is specific to the snowflake destination. So I think the GCS destination should use a separate one.
  2. The package names do not match the file paths. All the GCS files are under the gcs directories, but their packages are under s3. Consequently IntelliJ cannot correctly resolve the classes.

I will prepare a PR that fixes these issue, merge this PR, and then immediately merge my fixes.

* 🐛 Kube: Fix Source Ports not releasing. (#4822)

Closes #4660 .

On further investigation, it turns out we were not releasing the source ports. This is because of how the Process abstraction works - waitFor calls close under the hood. We were only calling waitFor if the process was still alive. This is determined by the exitValue which comes from the Kubernetes pod's termination status. However, these ports are a local resource and no close calls means they were left dangling, leading to the behaviour we see today.

Explicitly call close after retrieving the exit value of the Kubernetes pod. This better follows traditional assumptions around Processes - if the process returns some exit value, it means all resources associated with that process have been cleaned up.

Also,
- add in a bunch of debug logging for the future.
- have better names for Kubernetes workers to make operations easier.
