I just stumbled upon this repository and this talk by Gary Pendergast from WordCamp Europe 2016 quickly came to mind: https://wordpress.tv/2016/07/02/gary-pendergast-connected-wordpress/
It would be very interesting to explore whether connected sites could be used for proxying data like content from other sites or WordPress updates.
I haven't had a closer look at the source code, so please let me know if I misinterpreted this plugin's functionality or something.
