I think this issue should be titled something like: CI: remove obsolete Travis CI, and should contain both the removal of .travis.yml and the edits in README.md. Just to keep the issues focused and self-contained.

I was hesitant between what you'd asked (1 or 2) and given the comments in the other PR used plural commitS I started with 2 :-)

Travis CI is not used anymore.
Remove its configuration file.
