Pixie's won't pick up cake

What happened?

Already found this issue a while back, but I rediscovered it today

For some reason, when I spawn a pixie too far away from a cake item, she won't go after it. I can only befriend them when I spawn with a spawn egg less than, like, 3 blocks away from an already-dropped cake item. And if I spawn one in and THEN drop a cake, or if I spawn one too far away from a cake, no matter how close it is she never seems to pick it up. It appears to work fine(-ish) with naturally spawned pixies, but if so, is their detection radius for cake extremely small, are they just bugged, or am I just unlucky?
