openly available lists of journals

  • this is a listing of openly available lists of journals.
  • the initial focus will be on :
    • comprehensive lists of journals in bibliographic systems (wikidata, pubmed/medline etc... )

    • journals included in the national lists of Scholarly Publication Channels (see Janne Pölönen, J et al. 2021)


1. wikidata journal list

Wikidata over 100k scholarly/scientific journals . The list of journals and metadata can be extracted from daily data dumps or retrieved through the wikidata query service

note also the effort of to include more wikipedia pages on journals through the WikiProject_Academic_Journals

Licence:

  • All structured data in the main, property and lexeme namespaces is made available under the Creative Commons CC0 License;
  • text in other namespaces is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.

2. NLM Serial Catalogue

MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, or MEDLARS Online) is bibliographic database focusing on Life & Biomedical Sciences, operated by the The US national Library of Medicine. It indexes about 6k journals. See here for information on selection

PUBMED includes MEDLINE and - additionally - records from over 30k journals . List can be easly retrieved via ftp

Here we are however interested in the fact that, NLM also curates a comprehensive list of serials (beyond those it indexes). The query "serial"[Item Type] in pubmed retreives 147.600 entries

We refer to this here as the NLM Serial Catalogue . PUBMED journals are a subset

4. The BFI lists

The BFI lists include publication channels (Publishers, Journals, Book Series and Conference Series) used in the Danish Research Assessment.

The latest lists are from 2021, there are reports that the Research Assessment may change in future


5. Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers

The lists "operated jointly between The National Board of Scholarly Publishing (NPU) and Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills on behalf of The Norwegian Ministry of Education and Reseaarch" includes publications for which points are awarded in the research assessment.

6. ERA list

In the context of Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) the Australian Research Council publishes a list of journals "that are eligible for institutions’ submissions".

The latest list from 2018. The new round of ERA will take place in 2023 and a new list will be released in 2022


7. Science Metrix Classification list

in context a study commissioned by the European Commission, Science Metrix developed in 2011 a "open scientific journal ontology".

In subsequent years, the list was further developed.

The current version is v1.06 was released in in 2016-03-31

8. Nature Index Journals

The Nature Index is a list of "independently selected group of 82 high-quality science journals".

9. Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

DOAJ is database of open access journals. It indexes over 17k journals.

A list of journals with their metadata is generated on weekly basis. Accessible here

10. ERIH-PLUS

ERIH PLUS indexes academic journals in the humanities and social sciences (SSH). It started as the European Reference Index for the Humanities(ERIH) operated by the European Science Foundation. Since 2014 it has been maintained and further developed by the Norwegian Centre for Research Data (NSD).
