03. How to Create an Incipit Page

Anna Kijas edited this page May 7, 2024 · 21 revisions

Each incipit will need to have its own file within the texts folder in the repository.

  • The filename should follow this general model: lastname-title.md, so for example: leon-momentum.md.
  • If a title has multiple words or includes a number or mvt it will look like this: lastname-title_title_number.md, so for example: kay-five_portraits_001.md.

Use the information about the composition found in your spreadsheet and then look up the same edition in JumboSearch in order to confirm the citation details, including:

  • full title
  • editor (if provided)
  • call number
  • publisher
  • publication date
  • call number
  • stacks location (e.g. Music Library Stacks; Music Library Oversize)
  • permalink to the catalog record
  • instrumentation details

Additional editions information

  • If there is a digitized edition available in IMSLP, HathiTrust, etc., add the link below the citation as shown in the template below.

Proof read the incipit page and view it on the website to make sure there are no extra spaces, missing punctuation, or misspelled text.

Template

Template files are located in the repository in this folder

At the top of each incipit page you need to include these metadata elements. Do not use quotation marks or colons in the text after these elements or the page will not render on the site.

layout: mei
title: Title of Composition
author: Composer Last Name, First Name
ensemble: type of ensemble
period: decade when composition was created/published [or unknown if not known]
permalink: /last-name-short-title or opus/number/
document: mei filename

Provide citation details about this composition based on the exact score used to create the incipit.

  • Start the citation with "In" and use an asterisk * around the title to italicize it.

Provide an instrumentation summary and instrument group.

For the location include a link to Primo, the stacks location, and call number

If a digital edition is available link to it and identify website/name of site.

If use use a static image file (.png) instead of an mei file you will need to use "post" for layout and swap "document" with image." As follows:

layout: post
image: filename.png

  • The filename should follow this general model: lastname-title.md, so for example: leon-momentum.md.

Ensemble Types

Use the metadata term (left column) in the ensemble field on the incipit page. Use lower-case spelling. The description column includes examples of how an ensemble type might be described:

Instrumentation Groups

Use the terms to describe the instrumentation of the composition. Use lower-case spelling. (If you have an instrumentation group not listed below, please let us know). Include the number of instruments or voices in parenthesis after the instrument name. For example: medium voice (1), piano (1). Leave off the number if the work is for a large ensemble or orchestra or if the number of instruments is uncertain.
