Removed a bunch of old code and fixed some null references scattered throughout. Populations are correctly spawning now.
Also added code coverage badge.

Code coverage is around 75% at the moment; this PR adds a badge to make it easy to track, and the stats should be automatically updated with each CI build.
Resolves #5 though there's still work to be done to improve code coverage numbers.
