Nit: data isn't an array but the error message presents it as one. I would have expected results[%d] there.

Good catch! Fixed to make it clearer what the test is checking for.

Adds a unit test for the "user side" type encoders /decoders. This will help avoiding having a broken state as we change the string coder, and default custom type coders.
Also adjusts the coder print out a little for improved readability (and reduced redundancy).
