Why call zsyncmake and dd manually, appimagetool can do all of that for you:

appimagetool -u "zsync|https://s3-eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/ds9-apps/$(basename ${FILE}).zsync" ./the.AppDir

should do the trick (if it doesn't, let me know).
