Deploying VMs to Proxmox using cloud-init

Settings for this tutorial

• Template VM: Debian 9 based
• Proxmox: 5.1 or above

Download the cloud-init CDImage for Debian 9

• Download to a local folder in your Proxmox

Configure the template VM Settings using qm commands

• Minimal settings for this VM (micro type):

• Debian 9

• 1GB RAM

• 1 CPU

• 1 Network interface with static and private ip address

qm create 9000 --name debian-cloud-image --memory 1024 --net0 virtio,bridge=vmbr0,tag=10 --cores 1 --sockets 1 --cpu cputype=kvm64 --description "Debian 9.4 cloud image" --kvm 1 --numa 1

• IMPORTANT: Before to start this new VM, you need to resize the disk using the Proxmox menu to fit your needings. By default, cloud-init makes a small 2 GB disk that will be useless on most cases.

• Once you have done that, you can start your VM 9000 and install all of the needed software (git, docker, glusterfs, etc).

• For example, you can follow this guide to install basic software to add the final VM as a K8S node:

• When the template vm is ready, shutdown and clone it as many times as needed using the following script

Create as many VM as needed

• Creation of 3 VMs to use as gluster servers from the previous template VM 9000.
