Asterisks are mostly like a "multiply" sign in code, so I prefer the asterisk to be vertically aligned with math symbols, which themselves are vertically centered somewhere between numerals and lowercase letters.

In the Sans styles, the asterisks need to act like normal asterisks, so these ones do need to be more aligned with quotes, etc (as they currently are).
