ARFS (Automated reference frame selection) was designed for use with adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopes (AOSLO) as a pre-processing step for registration and averaging image sequences. This algorithm attempts to identify distinct spatial clusters of fixation within a sequence and output the least distorted frame from each cluster. The goal is to maximize coverage of the retina while minimizing distortions. A full description can be found here.

So far it has been validated for images of human photoreceptors using confocal AOSLO at 1° temporal, but it has been used with moderate success with split-detector and dark-field images of human, thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus), and northern tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri) photoreceptors at multiple retinal locations.

Progress is underway to increase speed, accuracy, and make the distortion measurement feature-independent.
