Just closed a tab in a pane, and got into this state, where a pane is open, but a few things are really unclear:

  • Is there a way to close this empty pane?
  • Is there a way to "select" it to open something else in it?
  • Is this definitely a pane still, and not a visual glitch with the remaining pane not being resized?

I feel like closing any panes with zero tabs in them might be a way to clarify many of these limbo-state feelings.

There's an option to "close empty panes" in the preferences. Many people wanted a stable pane arrangement despite open tabs. You can also focus the pane and use meta-w to close it. I'm going to close this issue out for the time being. If you think this was a bad decision though, you can reopen it and we can discuss further.
