insteon.serial() does not seem to return a promise?

insteon.serial() does not seem to return a promise?
Are there certain methods that do not return promises in home-controller?

I may be misusing insteon.serial() but it seems to ignore errors. When I
use in on a port that is already in use it returns as usual although
nothing will work after that.
