Hacker

indie computer programmer, coder, developer or dev.  The word hacker has multiple meanings (good & bad) but in the world of Diaspora generally signifies a computer programmer studying & working outside of mainstream or commercial channels. Hackers collaborate with other hackers to build open-source software projects — like Diaspora!

Hacking might be characterized as 'an appropriate application of ingenuity'.  Whether the result is a quick-and-dirty patchwork job or a carefully crafted work of art, you have to admire the cleverness that went into it ... (The Jargon File 2011)

Getting Help & Answers

History of Diaspora

Diaspora is a social network created by people like you.  In 2010, a few young programmers from NYU’s Courant Institute announced to the world that they wanted to create a new, safer, more privacy-aware social network.  They said they would need $10,000 to accomplish the task and instead, 6,479 people like you pledged $200,641.  Since then, the young programmers along with many volunteers from around the world have been working to create the next generation of Social Networks to allow you to socialize on the internet more safely ... • Markdown Text Formatting by John Gruber & Aaron Swartz
Introduction Markdown is a text-to-HTML conversion tool for web writers.  Markdown allows you to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, then convert it to structurally valid XHTML (or HTML).

_Thus, **Markdown** is two things:  (1) a plain text formatting syntax; and (2) a software tool, written in **Perl**, that converts the plain text formatting to **HTML**.  See the Syntax page for details pertaining to **Markdown’s** formatting syntax.  You can try it out, right now, using the online Dingus._

_The overriding design goal for **Markdown's** formatting syntax is to make it as readable as possible.  The idea is that a **Markdown**-formatted document should be publishable as-is, as plain text, without looking like it's been marked up with tags or formatting instructions_ ... • Netiquette
(short for 'network etiquette' or 'Internet etiquette') is a set of social conventions that facilitate interaction over networks, ranging from Usenet and mailing lists to blogs and forums.  These rules were described in IETF RFC 1855.  However, like many Internet phenomena, the concept and its application remain in a state of flux, and vary from community to community.
