Backdrop uses the global $theme_engine variable, like Drupal 7, but that variable is not documented on the Globals page.

Documentation for that variable should be added.

I guess that The theme engine used from the current theme. would suffice, but I am sure there is a better description that could be used.
Also, since a theme can have parent themes, it would not make clear from which theme is used.
