The bad plugin should write to STDERR when it detects problems. Currently it prints all messages to STDOUT. Scripting the detection of errors is difficult otherwise.

Also, can you help out a little bit by including some more detail on exactly how this would work? For example, it would be nice to see an example output marked with which lines you think should go to each stream.

Yes, the badfiles plugin. I'm not sure what the proper unix way of doing it would be. I wouldn't ever view the output, just know that there were errors without scraping the text. I guess any line that errors goes to stderr?
Is this still relevant? If so, what is blocking it? Is there anything you can do to help move it forward?
