Agenda / Discussion

Web4All / DIAGRAM CodeSprint (May 15/16)

previous years had competitive code sprint format where all the teams would work on the same library and then a panel of judges would award prizes.

Who is likely to attend:

Sina (just for code sprint), Amaya, Charles, Neil (potentially for the code sprint), Jason (maybe), John (no)

Which projects from the 2018 code sprint should we continue:

Any ideas for new projects considering the theme (Personalization) & improving Employment opportunities:

  1. Jupiter notebook (an open source web app that allows you to share web documents), which is a python based implementation interactive STEM documents, but has mapping for other languages now.
  2. how personalization can be done on the web that would go inside an EPUB
  3. making a plastic housed series of buttons to allow someone with severe mobility and dexterity issues to be able to type fast, or at least a decent rate

DIAGRAM Strategic Planning Meeting (Feb 28 / Mar 1)

Topics we would like to discuss:

  1. the ideas of looking at mobility in regards to T9 is worth a breakout session
  2. knowing what the next few years will look like for DIAGRAM (it's an incredible community and marvelous brain trust that has been built over a decade - Sina)
  3. brainstorm what needs to be done to make the Jupiter notebook - as a breakout and Volker could present what it is
  4. places where we can make a difference like the Jupiter notebook, and document it so it's more broadly useful outside of the project, interactive media, learning management system
  5. educational updatake of AR/VR

Anything we could show / demonstrate (from last years code sprint?)

  1. would be great if something could be linked from the code sprint because there will be some OSEP people there for the demos. Sina will work with Charles to put a few together.
  2. Neil will be doing a demo on mathshare
  3. Wescheme snd blocks for all demo (block langagues to construct programs) demo by Sina but would need a dash
  4. will be showing the work we've done on accessible math and extended image desriptions with reading systems testing
  5. ACE and GCA

What this WG wants to accomplish by the end of this award (Aug 2020). Here is our current Developer’s Charter.

  • moved to discuss next meeting
  • clarification on nuance in the chsarter where it mentions dyslexia

Brainstorm around Microsofts Machine Learning / AI

Beyond DAISY’s ACE (automatic EPUB checker using deque’s HTML Axe checker) how can we use ML/AI to help with the manual checking needed to certify that an EPUB meets WCAG (Eg. Image classification, alt-text relevant to surrounding text, or is duplicative of the fig caption/surrounding text and therefore should be presentational, language shifts, etc…

  1. a score so you know which ones need to be interveened upon. Language deteciton is a solved problem. Image recognition for the applicsation possibly less so. Could look at caption allignment in video.
  2. time consuming thing is varifying that the alt. text isn't just there but relevent to the image. If you had an image classifyer, you could potentially use those thigns to check the alt. text to see if it's mentioned and then asign some probability to check if the alt text is giving meaningful information.
  3. A bunuch of tempaltes on how people should describe images and maybe a way to match up what was done
  4. not just a wuestion of providing descriptions and names for objects, but filtering information so you're providing information about whast is salient

CSUN (Charles will be there on Wednesday & Thursday March 13/14th)

Who is going and would it make sense to set up any in person meetings then

  1. sina won't be there
  2. neil won't be there
  3. bruce won't be there but has some students there
  4. jason will be there
  5. much of the PhET team will be there
