Looks like the apollo codegen tool is getting officially deprecated: apollographql/apollo-tooling#2619
This new tooling is much nicer to use (https://www.graphql-code-generator.com/) but generates a very large file. Unfortunately I don't think there's a way around it, except to wait for dotansimha/graphql-code-generator#4562
