Wasted a whole bunch of time dealing with VPN and other issues, but the real issue was this.

$ boot2docker up
$ boot2docker ssh
$ sudo vi /var/lib/boot2docker/profile
$ # add EXTRA_ARGS="--insecure-registry <YOUR INSECURE HOST>"

Just FYI, tiborvass/docker@5937663 has been merged. I rewrote the documentation on the Docker side. Also localhost will be insecure by default in 1.3.2 (coming soon).

Indeed, thanks @tiborvass. I think this section still has value though, especially for pointing out even more handy uses of EXTRA_ARGS which I think isn't documented nearly enough.
