I wonder, if this could be something for GoMap as well.

The Every Door app just added a walking paper mode to scribble on the map.
I know from my own mapping, that I use the iOS Screenshot + Scribble Feature in nearly every mapping session to "write down" something that I cannot fix right away. There are different reasons for this, but mostly because some changes take time to map (just many clicks) which I cannot always do while on the go.
Making this into a proper feature would be a win for those situation.

The general setup is (as far as I understand it)…

  1. You change the "mode" to draw
  2. You draw lines or text
  3. The data is stored on a server by @Zverik
  4. You can fetch the data like a WMS service from that server

Here is some more info on this (because the info is scattered ATM):

  1. This is the issue in the every door repo on this, but it does not give a lot of info
  2. Those two images on Mastadon show the UI quite a bit better: Example 1, Example 2
  3. There is an issue on the iD Repo but nothing happened there, yet
  4. But that issue was picked up by the Rapid team and there is a PR forming to add the layer to Rapid

Back to GoMap…

Could this drawing service maybe become something that is shared between apps?
In general, this is a real use case for the way I use GoMap.
But there is another interesting thing: Every Door is not a full editor, so some changes are not for there.
But if the layer is shared, one could switch to GoMap later – maybe at a rest stop on a walk – and edit the map based on the scribble layer.

Writing this, a first feature would probably be to add the scribble layer as a transparent, additional overlay so one can see it.

Once EveryDoor and Rapid have the data sharing API and workflows settled we should have a better idea of the work involved in supporting this.

I think you meant this to be the second UI example :)

Thanks for making this ticket and for looking at this. I'd be happy to see GeoScribbles gain adoption and be widely used for taking notes on the field, eventually replacing walking papers.

I have updated the OSM wiki page to clear any misunderstandings. If anything comes, I'm willing to help.

@bryceco https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Zverik/diary/404188 shows a few more screenshot and you can add skribbels in the app on the fourth mode using the pen on the bottom left.
