Introduction

This document presents the encoding specifications for the sources published by the
VISUAL CONTAGIONS project. Among these sources, some of the exhibition catalogs, will expand BasArt,
the database of an older project, Artl@s.

The aim of the VISUAL CONTAGIONS project is to study the global circulation of images
from the 1890s to the advent of the Internet. It involves an innovative research on a
corpus of images that need to be recovered, described, dated and georeferenced. Then,
they will be analysed with the help of artificial vision algorithms, in order to identify the most
reproduced images and the patterns that circulated the more between 1890 and 1990.

To visualize the circulation of images, VISUAL CONTAGIONS deploys a global IIIF
database of images. This portal will group scanned images (which will be stored on
UNIGE servers) and external images (accessible through their IIIF manifests). The
encoded metadata will mainly be used for the generation of manifests, but it will
also, in the case of the exhibition catalogs, expand BasArt.

As for Artl@s, it manages several research projects on artistic and cultural
globalization. It also takes an active interest in digital methodologies and in
the circulation of images.

One of its projects is BasArt, an online database of exhibition catalogs from the
19th and 20th centuries. To expand the database, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel decided to find a way
to process and structure the scanned exhibition catalogs in order to easily complete the
database. They decided to use a pivot XML-TEI format and GROBID-dictionaries (a
machine-learning software designed to automatically structure the lexicographical
resources and to automatically encode the exhibition catalogs).

<div2>

Corpus

The main corpus of VISUAL CONTAGIONS is made up of five types of printed and
illustrated sources: exhibition catalogs, sales catalogs, periodicals, political
and advertising posters and chapbooks. But these encoding specifications concern
only two types of sources: the exhibition catalogs and the periodicals. The other
sources will be integrated into the project in the future.

</div2>
<div2>

The encoding structure

The encoding structure is composed of a <gi>teiHeader</gi> and a <gi>body</gi>.
These two parts are derived from two different steps of the project. The
information relating to the header concerns both periodicals and exhibition
catalogs, while the information relating to the body concerns only exhibition
catalogs.

The header is automatically generated, using an XSLT stylesheet, from a CSV
listing the periodicals and exhibition catalogs accessible online. But some
information will need to be added directly to the TEI file. This header has been
thought out to be multipurpose. Here is its general structure:

The catalog's <gi>body</gi> is derived from the GROBID-dictionaries output.
However, the encoded output does not correspond to our encoding for exhibition
catalogs, so we must transform some tags thanks to a XSLT stylesheet. Then we get an
encoded catalog based on the five levels of GROBID-dictionaries which are the
following ones:

<egXML xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/Examples">

<desc>

<trait/>
</desc>

<num/>

<desc/>

</egXML>

In order to refine the encoding, we decided to add tags to specify biographical
and descriptive information about the exhibited work that could be
added in a second time, by hand or thanks to a script.

The TEI Header structure (<gi>teiHeader</gi>)

This <gi>teiHeader</gi> was built to fulfill several objectives related to the
VISUAL CONTAGIONS project. It had to contain the necessary information to generate
IIIF manifests and also the necessary information for BasArt, the database of the
Artl@s project (some exhibition catalogs will expand the database). Moreover, this
<gi>teiHeader</gi> had to be adapted to encode the different types of sources
chosen for the project (exhibition catalogs and periodicals for the moment).

This <gi>teiHeader</gi> is composed of three main sections: <specList>
<specDesc key="fileDesc"/>
<specDesc key="profileDesc"/>
<specDesc key="revisionDesc"/>
</specList>

<div3>

The File Description (<gi>fileDesc</gi>)

The <gi>fileDesc</gi> constitutes the main part of this <gi>teiHeader</gi>. It
contains the bibliographic description of the electronic version of the
exhibition catalog or periodical. It gives information about the present
document as well as about its source (paper and digitised version).

It contains itself three sections: <specList>
<specDesc key="titleStmt"/>
<specDesc key="publicationStmt"/>
<specDesc key="sourceDesc"/>
</specList>

<div4>

The Title Statement (<gi>titleStmt</gi>)

The <gi>titleStmt</gi> is the first of the three mandatory elements of the
<gi>fileDesc</gi>. It contains the title of the electronic version of the

person(s) in charge of its content.

the <gi>text</gi> element.

Sometimes, entries can be grouped by <gi>list</gi>, which indicate the name of a
