Write the lab notebook in the open just like results, data, and software.

This can be done on github or other solutions (we can list some options in this issue).

Pros

  • Tracks scientific decisions
  • Pressure for best practices (in the open anyone can see all science documentation!)
  • A natural place to save (and potentially publicize) negative results
  • Quick sharing of results to other collaborators not directly involved with given project (speeds science)

Cons

  • Scooped? 🍨
  • Harm reputation?

Another potential con: there is a natural conflict with open notebooks and data that requires governance (ex. human germline data).

Yep, definitely. Linking this issue with #12

It could be a bit hazy at which data is sufficiently deidentified to be able to share intermediate data and results that arise.

Probably also worth mentioning in the context of EHR and differential privacy (e.g. @brettbj et al. 2019).
