Academic and partner justifications

  • Building is managed such that it is optimised by Ian with specific assumptions about how it is used. He has a great deal of responsibility because he is the only one that understands how its set up/can deal with issues. Some of the issues that arise are because inhabitants are not behaving how Ian expects them to - they don't know this is an issue because they aren't aware that there are expectations of them. Suggest that there is benefit in designing interventions that educate inhabitants about how the building is optimised to their behaviour/allow inhabitants to help adapt the building to their behaviour. Issue is not that Ian needs more support to solve issues (this doesn't remove the issues), about resolving the understanding between the inhabitants and Ian. Possibly at the point where Ian cannot optimise further without understanding the needs of the inhabitants. Maybe from Ian's PoV variables in managing the building are made visible to the inhabitants, then a joint process of optimising the variables to meet comfort of inhabitants and goals of management (maybe can push further optimising this way rather than imposing on inhabitants: more engagement from inhabitants).

Day in the life of Ian Key variables that are managed - how are they managed, what choices have been made (based on what), what could be changed in future? Ian's model of how the building is used vs. reality What impact has this had on working culture?

Who has responsibility for results of managing the building? Who responsible for gains/losses in energy? Who decides to get new equipment? Who decides to change BMS?

  • Are there other significant perspectives? Are the identified perspectives too general (multiple layers/types of management)?

China Mobile

Building manager still key in discussions of energy use - focus on large resources as significant energy expenditure. Will become more significant as initiatives like Big Cloud move on/energy becomes more expensive.

Little organisational or individual interest in personal energy monitoring/understanding: realisation that energy an issue, but expectation that it is a big issue to be tackled by organisations/govt.

Should we be treating lack of engagement with public as a challenge? Individuals need to be engaged - how to do this when individuals aren't currently interested/little pressure from above to interest them? How? Use big resources in organisation as a way to engage individuals - show how big resources impact them/how they impact the big resources ...
