  It was found that the null character \000, or (^@) was appended to
  the text in /proc/<pid>/cmdline in some cases. For each affected
  process id, this caused an error message in the journal of the form:

  BASH_ERR: internal_warning [ (11161)"bash" -> ...  CMD=$(cat /proc/9673/cmdline)" ] sh: command substitution: ignored null byte in input

  To resolve the issue, the "cat" command was substituted with "strings".

    • chg: usr: adjust command output so it continues onto the next line

    Some unix commands generate output with very long lines of output. The program was previously cutting off all text beyond the 250'th character. The full output width of commands are now shown in the reports.

    This change introduces a new variable in the config file, namely CFG_TEXTWIDTH, which is used to specify the width of the window that the program should use before continuing the output onto the next line. This variable will have a new option (-w) defined in an upcoming change that will allow this to be set from the command line. The default setting for this variable is set to what was the previously hard-coded value of 74 characters wide. Note that this value never had any effect on the executed internal linux command output, as many of them generated output longer than 74 characters. Where this value had the most effect was in the section headers in the generated ASCII file.

    It was found that the systemd-cgls command depends on the value of the COLUMNS variable to set the amount of output that it generates. The variable was set to the value of the new CFG_TEXTWIDTH variable.

    • chg: usr: Record the paragraph title and executed command in the ASCII file

    Until now, the paragraph title and the executed command are shown under each heading in the generated HTML file, but not in the ASCII file. This change puts the paragraph title and the command or function called, in the .txt file. So that they can each be easily found in the report, the commands begin with the prefix "###".

    This extends the meaning of the CFG_STINLINE variable (-L option), to now also include recording the command in the ASCII file by default. If the variable is set to "no" or the -L option is specified, recording of the command will be turned off in both generated reports.

    • chg: Standardize the section titles in the HTML and ASCII reports

    There were a few cases, namely in the "Cron and At" section where the section titles were displayed differently than in most other cases. This change allows a section title to be shown without issuing any other message in the body section of the report.

    In addition, by default, each section header title in the body of the ASCII report was only 74 characters wide. This change allows the separator line to make use of the previously introduced CFG_TEXTWIDTH variable, thus making the section separators more visible.

    Code was recently added to the program to gather information regarding ZFS filesystems and VMware. However, there was no means to turn off incorporating these sections into the report. New variables have been added to support their inclusion (by default), or exclusion. By using the -z and -v options, we can now selectively turn off collecting information for the ZFS filesystem and VMware sections, respectively.

    The new command-line option, -w allows a report width value to be provided to the program at runtime. This overrides the default and previously hardcoded value of 74. Depending on your X-window screen size in which you view the report, a value of 300 to 350 was found to be quite useful.

    New options were added to the help function, and the order of the various command-line options were modified to put related items in proximity to each other.

    The executed smart commands are now shown in the report. Also, for each disk drive, the separator line is made longer to make it more visible.

    • chg: show all ext2-4 partitions in display_ext_fs_param function

    If the lsblk command is in the PATH, then execute it to find all partitions that are ext2, 3, or 4, be them mounted or not, and display the filesystem information in turn for each of them. If lsblk is not available, then as before this change, only details about the mounted filesystems is provided in the report.

    In the case where we have a physical volume without known partitions (ie. just logical volumes), we discard the error message that was being generated.

    Summary of included changes, by category: ######################################################################## 1 - Command enhancements, additions and replacements - removed commented out and blank lines from dnsmasq.conf file and dig output, amongst many others - started using new network commands instead of legacy commands - ip maddress show - ip link - pminfo - ss

    3 - Modify Report titles or report text - changed several section titles including: - "Monitor" to "Processor Monitor" - "Installed from" to "Package Source repositories" - "Local Mountpoints" to "Mount points" - "ZFS Status" to "ZFS Filesystem Status" - and several other minor heading changes

    4 - adjust logic affecting command inclusion or position in the report - moved a few sections to be in proximity to similar items - included the execution of some commands when they were available even though, for example, tests of /proc indicated the command wouldn't run properly - eg. sensors - eg. software raid status

    • The variable being used to find the user crontab files was ill-defined.

    • The variable SMAP should have been SGMAP.

    • The /tmp/cfg2html file definition didn't match the pattern defined.

    • It was likely desired to list a compressed tar file instead of cat'ing it.

    • A parenthesis was missing at the end of an echo cmd.

    In a virtual environment, we may not have /dev/sd* disk devices. If not found, we list all non-virtual block devices.

    Based on the presence of the apt program, if found, "make deb" will be executed. If not found, "make rpm" will be executed.

    The --output-width option on the column command is not supported on older releases of CentOS (7). Using the -c option instead addresses this issue.

    • chg: dev: quiet the which command's msg if not found

    The which command issues a "not found" message on some systems. The message is dropped from the errorlog.

    • chg: dev: lsblk -o PATH N/A on old systems. Also added XFS

    older lsblk command didn't have the PATH option, so just dump out the mounted ext2-4 filesystems in that case.

    XFS filesystem parameters for the superblock for mounted filesystems, if any, are now shown too.

    CentOS generated a very long list of RPM package information, so the column command was added in case the -w option was used.

    column cmd was added to the selinux command as well.

    The column command was removed from ldconfig, as it made the output very messy looking.

    The code to list the files in the PATH was moved into a function. Now the function name is shown in the reports, instead of the code.

         On version 8 Redhat-based systems, proper shebang (#!) settings are now required.

         systems, having an empty shebang is deemed necessary.  This change

    chg: address issue #45 concerning the use of /etc/alternatives.
         This change lists the executable files in the PATH that are referenced by
         /etc/alternatives, but much more.  Given that the requester implied
         that what was desired to be seen were the files that are referenced
         in the PATH, the implemented change does the following:
         a) Shows the PATH that the cfg2html program was invoked with.  This is
           deemed to be useful in case the sysadmin running the program
           wants to document what the usual path for the invoking user (i.e root)
           normally has.
         b) Then the PATH that this program is using internally is shown. The
            internal PATH command is constructed using directories that are
            usually on every system (core path), followed by directories that
            are found on this particular system (secondary path list).
         c) If the LOCALPATH variable is set to a colon separated list of
           directories, the definition of this variable is next shown.
         d) Following this, all the executable files in the PATH or LOCALPATH,
           if defined, are listed in the order that they would be found.  Thus
           if a filename appears in the PATH directories more than once, only
           the first instance of the file is listed.  This effectively mimics
           the $(which) command on every executable file in the PATH (or LOCALPATH).
    fix: since /usr/kerberos/sbin is not present on all systems, it was removed
         from the core path that root uses, and added to the optional secondary
         list and added to the PATH only if it is present.
    chg: 2 new switches were added as options when the program is invoked.
         -x and -O can now be specified to not show the list of executable files
         in the PATH in case this is not desired, and the ability now exists to
         not display the list of files that have been deleted but are still open.
    fix: adjusted the options (while getopts) switches to not require that an
         argument be supplied for the -A (Altiris) collection.  Even if an
         argument was supplied, the program ignored it.
    fix: don't generate an error message if the hplog command is not present when
         switch -p is enabled.
