Tell us your idea!

If using a physical mouse and keyboard connected to the phone, it is not possible to use shortcuts present on the devices to change the map zoom.

What solution would you suggest?

It would be convenient to use the mouse scroll wheel to quickly change the zoom level while in a map view. Additionally if supported, it might be nice to also use <Ctrl/+> and <Ctrl/-> as keyboard shortcuts to change the zoom level.

Is there an alternative?

Leave it as is and use the existing +/- buttons.

Additional Information

It is already possible to use double click to quickly zoom in, but not out.

I recently acquired a gamepad controller for my device. It also isn't supported by the map.

However, Google Maps also neither supports zooming by scroll wheel of the mouse, with the mentioned keyboard shortcuts nor with the controller.

I am not sure if this is just not supported by (my version of = 9) Android, or if it's not supported by the Google App, however if there was one App I was sure would support hardware better it would have been Google...
