👋 Welcome to the Census Project tonight 🇺🇸

There's lots of work to be done tonight and through May of 2020 to make sure we get an accurate and representative count.

Here are some ideas:

Research

• 👀 Look for good, interesting, cool census resources online and add them to this thread if they haven't already been mentioned. (good for newbies) List of websites w/ examples of good census resources #29
• 🐍 Check out Oakland's census events/calendar app and evaluate if it could be repurposed for Greater Austin. (some python experience recommended) https://github.com/openoakland/dos-census-events Feature idea: Event Submission  #51

Design Research & Community Engagement -- Steve Harrison

• 🎉 (workshop design) Help us plan and facilitate a census solutions workshop or create-a-thon. More info from this deck starting at slide 21. PDF of the Census Solutions Workshop Toolkit
• 👍 (volunteer coordination) Help us plan and coordinate volunteer canvassing campaigns to meet residents where they are and help them overcome any technical challenges of filling out the Census online for the first time.

Mapping -- Lizzie Shackney

• ✅ COMPLETE 🗺 (GIS data formatting) Convert shapefiles to geojson and upload to the project Data: Convert shapefiles to geojson #17
• 🎨 (map/product design) List out features or design a wireframe/mockup or redlined screen grab of the map we should build with HTC census data to support organizing campaigns and to visualize high-level narratives for the general public.

Website -- Mateo

• 🚀 (hello world) See if you can get the app running locally on your computer by following the instructions in the README. Let us know how we can improve our docs our improve the dev experience for onboarding.
• ⚛️ (react land) Build an animated timeline compnont for the landing page modeled after CensusCalifornia.org Component: Timeline #26
• 🐛 (bug hunt) Gatsby has two primary commands for creating the static website. 1. gatsby develop 2. gatsby build. Currently the site runs fine with the 1st command in dev mode. But with the 2nd command, there is an error effecting production. The only way I can get the production site to load is with Cmd + Shft + R.
