brew update installs 1.4.0

From what I am gathering, the latest version of gh is 1.7.0, however, using brew update the latest version it reports (and installs) is 1.4.0?

Running gh --version I receive the following

A new release of gh is available: 0.10.1 → v1.7.0
https://github.com/cli/cli/releases/tag/v1.7.0

If I check https://github.com/cli/cli/releases/latest it reports latest as 1.7.0

Note: Running on macOS 10.15.7 (not that it makes any difference)

Yes, the latest version is v1.7.0 and that version is available though Homebrew too.

Please run brew update && brew upgrade gh. That should install the latest gh as /usr/local/bin/gh (provided your Homebrew prefix is at the default location).

If that doesn't work, than the issue is with your brew and you should report it to the Homebrew project.

Well, the above did not work immediately, but it uncovered some more details as what would be needed to fix the issue.
I have applied the following and I have successfully upgraded to gh 1.7.0

git -C /usr/local/Homebrew/Library/Taps/homebrew/homebrew-core fetch --unshallow
git -C /usr/local/Homebrew/Library/Taps/homebrew/homebrew-cask fetch --unshallow

brew upgrade gh

Thanks for sharing the workaround! I'm puzzled as to why the fetch --unshallow would be needed. You might want to report this to homebrew/brew.
