error in process filter: cider-repl-create: Symbol's value as variable is void: clojure--prettify-symbols-alist #833

I've upgraded to the latest cider in melpa, and I see this error after running cider jack in. It was also reported here.

You updated CIDER but probably forgot to update clojure-mode.

Are the two supposed to be updated in lock-step? If so, it would be nice if the readme mentioned that.

I and many people on my team have been bitten by this kind of version mismatch issue before. It would be really helpful if there was explicit version dependencies between these two packages, or at least some warnings being printed to the *messages* buffer.
