The project implements a horizontally scalable time series database backend for Prometheus, using Kubernetes as the orchestration engine. Originally implemented to manage hosted Prometheus as a multi-tenant service on AWS, the project has expanded to support other cloud stores such as GCP.
FAQs:
At time of writing the main users include three vendors, all of whom embed a Prometheus-aaS in their products, as well as some large scale Prometheus adopters like Electronic Arts.
With growing community interest, Weaveworks recently took the first step towards a community driven dev model & governance. The intent is for the independent project to be known as "Cortex".
Relationship to Prometheus: The Cortex project is not a general purpose TSDB, because it currently supports Prometheus metrics only. It could evolve to support a superset of this (eg events, tracing). Currently the Prometheus org does not include any sub-projects for non-standard Prometheus storage. Several exist: Cortex, Thanos, InfluxDB, Metrictank. The question of how to express a formal relationship between Prometheus and the various 3rd party storage tools remains a matter for the Prometheus team.
Finally, this project needs 2 TOC sponsors. As I have a vested interest in the project, I am opting out of any sponsorship / decisions for this proposal.
