Could potentially be done by checking if the variable in an l-value in a statement.

Styling the "variable use" edges to indicate where assignments occur would give a quick visual overview of a variable's usage.

I often use the Eclipse "Call Hierarchy" view on a variable that distinguishes "R", "W", and "RW" accesses.
