How to embed an image, generated on a custom runner, in GITHUB_STEP_SUMMARY

I want to be able to embed a plot in my GITHUB_STEP_SUMMARY.

I tried to generate an HTML snippet with the image encoded as base64 - doesn't work:

echo '<div><img align="left" src="data:image/png;base64,DATA"></div>' >> $GITHUB_STEP_SUMMARY

I tested it in a browser and it works so the HTML is generated correctly.

I tried to upload the image to Artifacts but there's no easy way to get the link to an uploaded artifact.

Is there a way to do it, without uploading an image to another server that serves that image link?

The most common way would be to upload an image to another server as you mentioned, but I'm excited to see if any other Community members have ideas!
