Current forks can show which fork is more popular then others by having children forks, but it cannot tell which fork is more active then others.
So I think if the forks can be sort by having commits ahead the origin repository, then pepole could find more active forks easily.
How this idea comes
I'm maintianing some public respositories forked from others recently, some of the orgin repositories are lack of maintaince for a long while, like dead repositories.
Pepole asking for bug fix or new features in the origin repository are hopeless.
Then there comes forks, new maintainers fix bugs and implement features (repeatly) on their forks.
If they didn't anonuce their forks in the origin repository's issue or send pull requests, new comers may never found there are still active forks. Like I didn't realized there are active forks when I starting my fork.
After sending pull request, there are people asking why it's not being merged, then I got notified by email, and realized there may be more forks similar to my situation. Actually I really found one later, a more active fork then my.
